In France, in order to link a latent print recovered from a crime scene to a friction ridge impression taken from a suspect, forensic experts rely on two approaches:<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 The 12-point numerical standard<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 The probabilistic or holistic approach<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For nearly a century, the binary view of fingerprint identification based on the \u201c12-point standard\u201d has gradually given way to a continuum of possible conclusions. Depending not only on the number but also on the quality of the minutiae present in the questioned print, experts use a numerical and verbal scale of comparative assessment that may point more or less strongly toward identification or exclusion.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At present, this probabilistic approach is applied only in complex fingerprint examinations.
