Whether fingerprints or biological residues (DNA), such evidence is invaluable for tracing the network back to the traffickers.<\/strong><\/h3><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dna-a-key-tool-in-criminal-investigations\"><strong>DNA \u2014 a key tool in criminal investigations<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depuis quelques ann\u00e9es, l\u2019analyse de l\u2019ADN est devenue un outil incontournable pour \u00e9lucider les Over the past few years, DNA analysis has become an essential tool in solving criminal cases, including long-unsolved <em>cold cases<\/em>. In a recent study conducted at <a href=\"https:\/\/news.flinders.edu.au\/\">Flinders University<\/a>, the research team led by forensic science PhD candidate Madison Nolan and Professor Adrian Linacre proposes to push the boundaries of suspect identification in drug trafficking cases through advanced genetic profiling.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-packaging-as-a-source-of-evidence\"><strong>Packaging as a source of evidence<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before reaching the streets, drugs are transformed and packaged in various types of containers \u2014 which can become a goldmine of information for forensic investigators. However, repeated handling and exposure to environmental factors can degrade DNA, sometimes rendering it unusable. To support forensic work, the Flinders team focused on identifying the areas of drug packaging most likely to retain exploitable biological traces.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-better-dna-transfer-within-the-packaging\"><strong>Better DNA transfer within the packaging<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the study\u2019s findings, DNA presence was particularly significant <strong>on capsules<\/strong> containing powdered substances and on <strong>the <em>inner surfaces<\/em><\/strong> of \u201cZiploc\u201d-type bags used to store them, especially along the interior edges of the seal. Even brief contact\u2014around 30 seconds\u2014was enough to leave detectable amounts of DNA. Because these traces are located <em>inside<\/em> the packaging, the risk of external contamination is considerably reduced.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-perspectives-for-forensic-investigations\"><strong>New perspectives for forensic investigations<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For forensic police, this research offers new insights for optimizing sampling during drug seizures. By focusing primarily on the <em>outer surfaces of capsules<\/em> and the <em>inner surfaces of plastic bags<\/em>, investigators can obtain higher-quality genetic profiles\u2014provided that collection procedures are followed meticulously to avoid any contamination.
